Putting the ‘Digital’ in Digital Marketing

As technology continues to develop and grow its impact, virtual reality (VR) is increasing in popularity. VR allows users to experience a specific environment, using a software that creates real images as if the user were actually in the exact location.

Despite VR being a mostly novelty item, this new technology can be seen to become an important new medium for advertising in the future

How exactly does advertising in VR work?

VR is all about immersion. Virtual reality marketing enables brands to place their brand imagery closer to the eyes of the consumer. The New York Times began a virtual storytelling campaign where they delivered Google Cardboard glasses to their subscribers in order to watch a VR film. This experience provided viewers with emotional intensity, causing reinforced brand loyalty and gave a chance for subscribers to experience a story instead of reading it.

Why should you care?

62% of consumers say that they would feel more engaged with a brand that sponsors a VR experience

71% of consumers perceives a brand that uses virtual reality as forward-thinking

The more content that becomes tangible, the more engagement increases. Innovated brands are leveraging this technology. For example, The North Face offered its shoppers an opportunity to hike thought Yosemite National Park. Such an immersive experience and strong emotions it triggered is perfect for such a specialised market. It made the customer feel as if they were truly explore, and hence motivating them to actually buy the shoes.

Do you think Virtual Reality marketing makes an impact? Do you know any businesses that have used this marketing technique?

  1. I think for some things, VR makes a lot of sense but I feel like at the moment it’s just a bit too bulky, it’s like when IMAX 3D glasses were almost like a full headset, your neck would be so tired by the end of the movie. Personally I’d prefer to wait till when VR is a bit more developed before I give it a try.

  2. I used to think of VR as expensive headsets, but Snapchat and Instagram filters are the new and widespread way that marketers can make use of VR. I’m so excited to see where this technology will go in the future

  3. I think VR marketing has a potential to grow and may be adopted by marketers quite often in the future. I personally have used VR in terms of social media filters and also came across a few articles about how VR is being used in healthcare to treat patients suffering with PTSD as it is proved to be effective in pain management.
